Limitless Living Blog #53 - Comparison is the Thief of Joy

Comparison is the Thief of Joy

The more and more I compare myself to others, the less joy I have. The comparison game is tricky. A part of you wants to compare automatically, subconsciously, while another part called jealousy does the rest. When I don't compare and just focus on my family and others, my joy is through the roof. To the point where joy is all around me. I find my happiness meter goes up as well. My name is Scotty and welcome to the Limitless Living Blog. This is our 53rd post.

My wife told me that someone is always above you and beneath you, no matter who you are. Meaning someone is always in a better situation/possesses more skill than you in your field. At the same time, someone is always in a worse situation/not as talented as you. So never let yourself get too high or too low in life. So the comparison game is irrelevant. God has you where He wants you. He will indeed turn your situation you're going through around for His glory. I also heard this illustration on a podcast episode: We always focus on the highs and lows of life/the mountains and valleys. However, only a small part of our lives are actually in a “mountain” or “valley”, while the majority of our lives are lived in between a mountain and a valley. Yet we focus only on the mountains and valleys of life, comparing our highs and lows to others around us. If we just lived our lives to the best of our ability, the comparison is insufficient evidence in our lives. Sometimes in life, you can't control mountains and valleys. They just come. That’s even more evidence that the comparison game is insufficient. There's no factual data that states we need to be comparing, nor does it do anything positive in our lives. Just go the joy route and be thankful in all circumstances, it'll go much further in your life, trust me. I've done both, and not playing the comparison game, feels much better.
