Limitless Living Blog #34 - Immediate vs Delayed Gratification

Immediate vs Delayed Gratification

Huge difference. I’ve learned and currently learning the difference between immediate and delayed gratification. How much it truly alters your life. The difference between candy every day for five years vs a plant diet for five years. This could add or subtract years from your life. Candy is so immediate though, and tastes amazing. This proves how sick we are as humans. This proves how much we need God. We’re willing to get diabetes at a young age, simply because of immediate gratification. We’re willing to change our lives for the negative because of a small dopamine hit. This is Scotty, and welcome to the 34th blog post here on the Limitless Living Blog. Thanks for tuning in.

Why do we choose what feels good now, but bites us in our butts later? It’s so confusing to me, yet I do it all of the time. I love candy, knowing my family struggles with diabetes. So, somehow, I have to trick my brain into not eating this delicious dessert. To be completely transparent, it’s hard for me to. I’d much rather chew on airheads rather than a salad. A coke rather than water. Sugar gives us a dopamine hit in our brain, so we feel good when we consume it. Same thing with buying new clothes/jewelry, rather than investing our money into a growth stock mutual fund. A mutual fund is not sexy on day three of investing, but clothes feel amazing to buy immediately. Like we’re sick. I don’t get it, yet I do it! I’d rather have new clothes rather than invest money for the long haul. Why do we do that, knowing the consequences and outcome?

And the crazy thing about delayed gratification is that it will still come. We didn’t say, never gratification. We said delayed. Meaning at the right time, you will harvest what you planted. Whatever you planted, if you have patience and work at it, wow. The results will be amazing. Delayed and immediate gratification are bound to happen in life. You have the choice, I have the choice. We need to choose wisely for ourselves, our families, our futures, careers, finances, health.

Process:

  1. Realize the difference between delayed and immediate gratification.
  2. Be able to adjust your brain and ask God to realign your brain to be able to withstand the patience for delayed gratification.
  3. Give glory to God.
